I have read about at least one dog who sat on his dead master's grave and would have died of starvation or exposure if he/she not been taken away for drink and food.

Dogs are pack animals, social creatures. To them all the food in the world is not worth a days loneliness.
(I exaggerate, but you get the point).
Many of dogs have stayed with and loyal to their masters that hadn't any food for them much less themselves, such as homeless folk with a pet dog. Dogs are truly mans best friend.
